President Yoon Seok-yeol struggling to choose the top two for Prime Minister and Chief of Staff... Meeting with Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung also a variable = South Korea
President Yoon Seok-yeol has been pondering for 11 days over who to choose as the next prime minister and chief secretary.
"It seems that the situation is not such that the election can be held immediately. For now, the most urgent task is to select a chief secretary," he said. He said that the appointment of a chief secretary, who does not require the consent of the National Assembly, should be made quickly, and that the election should be carried out after the April 10 general election defeat.
There is also a recognition within and outside the ruling party that the organization within the presidential office, which has been thrown into turmoil by the mass resignation of aides since the North Korean incident, needs to be tightened up.
However, speculation continues to circulate about the Chief of Staff. Initially, it was expected to be held on the 19th, but at the latest on the 21st.
The reason for the delay in the selection is the fact that President Yoon and Lee Jae-myung, both of whom are from the Democratic Party (opposition party), met on the 19th.
There are also speculations that he may meet with the leader. With no specific date for the meeting yet to be decided, it is possible that the opposition camp will show strong opposition to the newly announced Chief of Staff, and he may finally be able to speak out.
President Yoon must be aware that the 'cooperation' that has already started may be torn apart.
The Democratic Party's Chief of Staff, Chun Jun-ho, will meet with him soon to make behind-the-scenes arrangements regarding the date, time, format, and agenda of the meeting. As this will be the first meeting since he took office, the selection will be announced after the meeting between the two.
Some have speculated that this is to show courtesy to the leader of the largest opposition party.
President Yoon was quoted as saying that he was not concerned with the name of the meeting. In response, a presidential office official said, "President Yoon has not accepted him as a political partner.
President Yoon is also considering soliciting Lee's opinion on the selection of the new prime minister during the meeting.
The chief secretaries are People Power Party lawmakers Jeong Jin-seok and Lee Jo.
Former Rep. Lee Jeong-hyun is still considered a strong candidate. In addition, the names of Rep. Chang Jae-won and former Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong have also been mentioned.
It continues to rise regardless of our will.
