As hot as the ratings. Queen of Tears has been receiving criticism from viewers for a development that is not worthy of tvN's best drama record.
The final episode of "Queen of Tears," which aired on the 28th, set a record with an average of 28.4% and a maximum of 31% for households in metropolitan areas and an average of 24.9% and a maximum of 27.3% for households nationwide, breaking its own record and surpassing "Crash Landing of Love" to become the number one rated tvN drama of all time. It also maintained a high ranking on Netflix's global rankings, and gained strong popularity.
However, the drama failed to live up to its popularity, leaving viewers in a bit of a dilemma. The Internet has been filled with viewer comments condemning the drama's ending.
Once Queen of Tears ended with the happy ending that viewers wanted. Baek Hyun-woo (played by Kim Soo-hyun) and Hong Hye-in (played by Kim Ji-won) overcame many crises and lived happily ever after. However, the drama depicted this process in a ridiculous manner, and the fun and excitement that had been built up until that point was lost.
From episode 15 to episode 16, the crisis between Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hye-in was repeated. Before Hae-in woke up from surgery, Hyun-woo was imprisoned as a suspect in a murder. Unable to be with Hae-in when she woke up after losing her memory, her seat was taken by Yoon Eun-sung (played by Park Sung-hoon). Hye-in, who lost her memory, continued to reject Hyun-woo, but through the traces she left behind, she came to realize that Hyun-woo was serious about her. However, as soon as she realized, Hye-in was kidnapped by Eun-sung, and their happiness was one step away.
It did not end there. Hye-in escaped from Eun-sung and ran to Hyun-woo, but Eun-sung pulled the trigger of a gun on Hye-in, and Hyun-woo was shot instead, again putting her in danger. Here, Eun-sung was gunned down by the police and others.
It is pointed out that the film depicted numerous crises in order to dramatize their happy ending, but the forced introduction of this incident diminished the truthfulness of the film.
Hyun-woo, who had collapsed in the intensive care unit, finally regained consciousness and confirmed his feelings for Hae-in and each other. They later had a child together and created a happy family. The film goes one step further and includes the ending of the funeral. An elderly man was shown visiting a tombstone with the name Hong Hae-in, birth date of August 22, 1990, and death date of April 7, 2074. This old man is Hyeon-woo. According to the epitaph, Hae-in lived long enough to reach the age of 84, and Hyun-woo lived even longer than her to reach a happy ending.
However, viewers responded that such a happy ending also crossed the line. They want a happy ending for the male and female leads in romantic comedies, but they do not want to see them grow old. The Queen of Tears," despite its intensity, did not end well enough, and viewers are divided on whether they approve or disapprove of it.
