Other candidates for National Assembly Speaker from the Lee Jae-myung faction also spoke of impeachment. The remarks were noteworthy because they came on the day that President Yoon and Lee Jae-myung, the head of the Democratic Party (opposition party), held their first meeting.
The candidates who were elected this fall attended a meeting to evaluate the general election held at the National Assembly on the 29th by the Democratic National Reform Council, a pro-Lee Jae-myung outside parliament organization.
At the meeting, President-elect Aki stated, "At the time of the candlelight impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in 2016, there were calls for a 'nationally neutral cabinet.'
"However, as the representative of the Democratic Party, I rejected this and prepared for impeachment. If the same thing (impeachment) happens again, we must never reach a conclusion that is far removed from the will of the people."
The meeting was also attended by many other candidates for National Assembly Speaker from the Democratic Party of Korea, who are seeking to capture the votes of pro-Lee Jae-myung supporters. Rep. Cho Jeong-sik said, "We should not allow the president to exercise his veto power.
"We will block this and, if necessary, try to amend the constitution to lower the number of seats needed to impeach from 200 to 180. We must also eradicate the barbaric acts of political prosecutors, such as searches of the National Assembly building," he said.
Rep. Woo Won-sik said, "If the National Assembly doesn't have the sense that 'we are entrusting it to the Democratic Party, this is a proper National Assembly,' it cannot take on administrative power.
In order to carry out the people's command, we must have the ability to control the National Assembly and the people's livelihoods." Rep. Jeong Seong-ho said, "From the party's perspective,
"If that doesn't happen, we must move forward resolutely. As the majority party, we will work together to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Democratic Party."
In addition, the Democratic Party's National Reform Council voted last year to approve the arrest of Chairman Lee.
He has led the strong pro-Lee Jae-myung voices within the party, strongly criticizing non-Lee Jae-myung lawmakers who spoke about the need for the bill to be passed.
