"The Itaewon Special Act passed the National Assembly plenary session today. Thanks to the bereaved families who made concessions to allow the ruling and opposition parties to reach an agreement, the bill was passed by the National Assembly today," Kang Mi-jeong, spokesperson for the Fatherland Reform Party, said in a written statement that afternoon.
"The Itaewon Special Act passed today is a result of the people who raised their voices together to 'uncover the truth.'" Kang said, "The Itaewon Special Act passed today is a bill to investigate the tragedy that occurred in the center of Seoul in the fall of 2022.
"This will be the first step in finding the truth of the matter. It will be the first step in finding those responsible and taking measures to prevent recurrence," he said.
"I hope that this will be a small comfort to the Korean people who are heartbroken by this incident," Kang said. "The amendments agreed upon by the ruling and opposition parties are not enough to uncover the truth behind the Oct. 29 tragedy.
"It may not be possible, but the Fatherland Reform Party will monitor whether the special committee completes its work properly. Above all, we will watch to see whether the government interferes with the committee's activities."
"Once again, I pray for the repose of the souls of the victims and offer words of comfort to their families," he said.

The bill, jointly sponsored by the ruling People Power Party's floor leader, Lee Jae-in, and the opposition Democratic Party's floor leader, Hong Ik-pyo, was passed with 256 votes in favor and 3 abstentions out of the 259 lawmakers present.
The official name of this bill is 'Special Bill for Guaranteeing the Rights of Victims of the October 29 Itaewon Massacre, Uncovering the Truth, and Preventing Recurrence.'
