On the 2nd, British film media "Screen Daily" published an exclusive interview with director Jang Jae-Hee-jung to commemorate the global popularity of "Tombbreak."
When asked about her thoughts on the success of the film both at home and abroad, director Jang Jae-hee said, "It seems to have failed as a film for occult genre enthusiasts," but added, "It's a good film."
"What I'm sure of is that I want to make a movie that people will want to see in the cinema, a movie that won't get boring," he said. He also revealed his plans for his next film, which is garnering public attention.
Regarding the success of "The Tomb of the Lost," director Jaehyun stated that he has no plans to make a sequel or spinoff using the characters or worldview of "The Tomb of the Lost." He said, "I have to keep evolving.
"No. It's important to make something new. If I made a sequel, I would certainly earn a lot of money, but I wouldn't be able to evolve as a director," he said, explaining his reasoning.
Instead, he told me that he has just started writing his next novel and is thinking of a story based on vampires.
The director said, "The story is inspired by Bram Stoker, the author of 'Dracula,' and is likely to be just as exciting as 'The Tomb of the Slain.'"
I am writing something very mysterious. I want to make a Korean vampire movie. It will be set against the backdrop of a Greek Orthodox church in Russia. It took about two years of pre-production and pre-shooting.
"I think I'll write it. I think it'll probably be ready within four years. I'm a bit lazy," he said. He is hoping and hoping that the production budget will expand on the back of his recent success.
Director Jang Jae-Hee said, "I'm not the kind of person who uses huge budgets when making movies. The production costs for my films are usually around 15 billion won (about 17 million yen).
"With that budget, I can pretty much do everything I want. The same goes for my next film. I want to make it within that budget. I want to make a story that's even weirder than the last one."
Following the films "Priest" and "Sabaha," director Jang Jae-Hee-yeon, who made history in the Korean occult genre with "Tombbreak," has many fans in anticipation of his next film.
Expectations are high. The film "Hamboku," released in February, became the first 10 million-yen film of 2024, attracting 11.86 million viewers.
