"The rich lives we enjoy today are the result of the sweat and tears of our parents' generation. The Republic of Korea is a country built by our great parents," President Yoon said. "The sacrifices of our parents' generation continue to this day, but our society has developed rapidly.
"I often wonder if I am living my life forgetting how grateful I am to them," he said. This is the first time that a sitting president has attended a Parents' Day event.
President Yoon said, "The lives of the parents of the Republic of Korea were a history of dedication. They were born into poor and harsh times and worked tirelessly when they were young.
"I was busy every day taking care of my family while working hard," he said. "That noble dedication led to a love for not only my family but also my country," he said, referring to the movie "Let's Meet in the International Market."
President Yoon said, "Now, I have to serve my country well so that my parents can spend their old age happily.
"In the end, the economy is the most important thing for that to happen," he said. "Only if the country is run well can we serve the elderly, and the elderly can have peace of mind about the country's future."
"Since I took office, I have worked to restore private life and the economy, and to reduce the national debt," he added.
President Yoon announced on the same day that exports had recorded a surplus for 11 consecutive months and that the country's exports had reached its highest level in two years.
He noted the record economic growth rate in the first quarter and the forecast that South Korea's per capita GDP will exceed $40,000 in 2026, emphasizing that the South Korean economy continues to grow.
He also promised to increase basic pensions, which support post-retirement income, to 400,000 won (US$450) during his term, and to build customized housing and health care facilities for the elderly.
He also said that policies will be steadily expanded. He also said that the burden will be reduced by supporting nursing care costs, and that an integrated support system for medical care, medical treatment, and nursing care services will be established to "make the elderly healthier and happier."
"I will check everything thoroughly and save money so that I can enjoy my retirement years," he promised. At the commemorative ceremony, President Yoon presented carnations to the elderly who have demonstrated love for their neighbors.
Meanwhile, the ceremony was attended by Chang Sang-yoon, the Presidential Secretary for Social Affairs, Cho Kyu-hong, Minister of Health and Welfare, and Bang Ki-seong, Director of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, among others, and included those who have demonstrated filial piety and their families.
Approximately 1,300 people participated, including seniors from elderly care families, senior citizen centers for people living alone, and senior citizen groups.
