The South Korean Ministry of Defense announced that nine outstanding members of the command will participate in a one-week training program in the United States from the 5th (local time) to the 11th.
The Cyber Flag exercise, which is supervised by the U.S. Cyber Command, has been held since 2011 as part of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, where the U.S. shares secret information.
The aim of the initiative is to strengthen cyber security cooperation and cyber threat response capabilities with allies and friendly nations, including the Five Eyes countries of the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The training will be held at the U.S. Cyber Training Center in Virginia. In addition to the five Five Eyes countries, 13 partner countries, including South Korea, will participate. South Korea will hold a training session in 2022.
This will be the third time since the first time in 2017. The ministry decided to participate in the Cyber Flag exercise on a regular basis based on the agreement reached at the 55th ROK-U.S. Regular Security Consultation (SCM) in November last year.
Through this training, South Korean military personnel attached to the command will learn defensive operational procedures to prepare for cyber attacks between participating countries. In addition, they will be able to monitor enemy cyber activities through the operation of a multinational information fusion team.
"In the future, the Cyber Operations Unit will not only conduct U.S. Cyber Flag training, but also joint U.S.-ROK Cyber Command training," the ministry said.
"We plan to continuously develop our cyber cooperation system through bilateral training and the exchange of cyber experts and technologies," he said.
