A man in his 20s who was accused of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend after she reported domestic violence and holding her captive for about 40 minutes was sentenced to eight years in prison in the first instance. However, the man appealed the sentence, claiming that he was not satisfied with the sentence.
According to the Korean legal community on the 7th, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced a defendant named Kim (28), who was indicted on charges of violating the Violence Acts Punishment Act (joint confinement) and special injury, to eight years in prison on the 30th of last month, and
The court ordered him to take 40 hours of treatment classes and pay an additional 300,000 won (US$340). The court said, "The defendant has made settlements with, or received forgiveness from, most of the victims of violent crimes, and has not paid compensation."
"Even after he was arrested in connection with this case, he showed no restraint and was punished several times in detention for disciplinary violations," the statement said, adding, "A long prison sentence is unavoidable."
After Kim was reported by his ex-girlfriend in February last year, he visited her room with a friend on the pretext of picking up her belongings, dragged her out of the room, and forced her into his car.
He is accused of giving her a ride for about 42 minutes in the Gangnam-gu and Gwanak-gu areas of Seoul. Kim is accused of assaulting and injuring the victim several times between September and October last year.
When the victim reported the abduction using a smart watch provided by the police station for personal protection, the suspect destroyed the watch.
In addition, he did not pay after eating and drinking at an entertainment establishment, and threatened other women he was dating and injured them with a weapon.
Kim is also accused of several violent crimes, including assaulting a detention center official, and of using drugs. The prosecution has indicted him on seven charges.
Kim only reached a settlement with the victim for some of the assault and intimidation charges. The court found him guilty of all other charges, except for the crime for which a petition for non-penalty was filed, and sentenced him to prison.
However, Kim appealed the verdict.
