Through the partnership, the two companies plan to use 6G mobile communications and "Open RAN" technology based on the 6G standard, which is expected to be fully implemented from 2030.
The two companies will cooperate to develop ultra-wideband wireless technology that utilizes anticipated frequencies. They will also aim to discover new services using 6G and innovate infrastructure.
KT explained that the purpose of its collaboration with Nokia is to lead the development and commercialization of global 6G mobile communications standards.
"Through our collaboration with Nokia, we hope to lead the development of mobile communications technology that is directly linked to the cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) fields in the future," said Lee Jung-sik, director of the KT Network Research Institute.
In relation to this, the research and development (R&D) costs for 6G, which were approved by the Ministry of Science and ICT last year and passed the preliminary investigation, were estimated at 440.73 billion won (about 50.2114 billion won).
The total cost of the project will be 373.17 billion won (approximately 42.49 billion yen). Of this, the national budget will be 373.17 billion won (approximately 42.49 billion yen). South Korea will begin developing 6G commercialization technology and core components from 2024.
The goal is to demonstrate pre-6G in 2026.
