大韓航空、B747-8i 5機を売却「運用効率の向上」
Korean Air sells five B747-8i aircraft to ”improve operational efficiency”
Korean Air will sell five Boeing 747-8i planes, nicknamed the "Queen of the Skies," to a U.S. airline. The airline will dispose of its existing fleet and purchase new aircraft, including the more fuel-efficient Airbus A350.
According to the aviation industry and foreign media on the 9th, Korean Air has acquired a B747-8i from the US aerospace company Sierra Nevada.
Korean Air announced the previous day that it had decided to sell five aircraft for 918.3 billion won (about 104.3 billion yen).
The B747-8i is a passenger aircraft model manufactured by the American company Boeing, and is a large passenger aircraft that was introduced in 2015. With the sale of the five aircraft, the company will have four more aircraft in total out of the nine it currently owns.
Korean Air has previously announced plans to gradually sell off all of its B747-8i fleet.
In an interview with 'Airport', Boeing said it plans to phase out the Boeing 747-8i within 10 years. Such a sale would be made possible due to the aircraft's reduced fuel efficiency and tightening global carbon emissions regulations.
Korean Air recently ordered 33 A350 family aircraft, Airbus' next-generation medium-sized and large aircraft.
The strategy is to improve operational efficiency by introducing new aircraft with lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to current models. Korean Air plans to gradually introduce new aircraft from this year through to 2032.
