An incident was reported in which an elderly man in his 80s with dementia got lost while traveling in South Korea with his family, but was able to return safely to his family with the help of local citizens.
According to Channel A on the 12th, on the 16th of last month, a Japanese man in his 80s, Mr. A, went missing at Namdaemun Market while visiting Seoul with his family for sightseeing.
Afterwards, Mr. A walked to Chungmuro Station, about 2 kilometers from Namdaemun Market, and entered a labor attorney's office on the fifth floor of a nearby building.
Labor lawyer Won described the situation at the time, saying, "He must have walked a long way. When I touched his back, he was soaked with sweat." An elderly man with thinning hair and a hunched back came into the office and said something in Japanese.
So the office staff tried to communicate using an interpreter app, and then they searched for acquaintances who could speak Japanese to communicate with them.
Staff member Seo Hyun-jung said, "He said he was going to Tokyo by subway."
"When I heard that story, I thought she might have dementia," he said. Around that time, a missing person report was filed and Namdaemun Police Station was also searching for A, so A was handed over to the police.
He was able to return safely to his family.
