<Women's Golf> Lee Ye-won wins her first ever wire-to-wire victory, avenging her loss at the Salonpas Cup last week... Also expresses her admiration for Japan's expansion
Lee Ye-won participated in the NH Investment Securities Ladies Championship of the KLPGA Tour held at Suwon Country Club in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do on the 12th.
In the final round of the "Ship" Tournament (total prize money: 800 million won/approximately 90 million yen), he recorded a total of 13 under par and won, achieving his fifth individual victory.
Lee Ye-won, who beat Yoon In-na by three strokes in the same final group, improved her score by five strokes.
This was her second victory of the season, following her victory in the previous tournament. Lee Ye-won won 144 million won (approximately 16 million yen) and rose to third place in the prize money ranking and third place in the grand prize points ranking.
She was one step closer to PARK JIYEON, who was ranked first in the grand prize points and average strokes. In the third round on the final day, Lee Ye-won started the third round in the lead, three strokes ahead of second-place Lee Seung-yeon, and played in the same group.
Yoon In-na also showed tenacious pursuit, scoring a birdie on the first hole. Lee Ye-won concentrated on the 16th hole and made a long 6.3 meter putt to win the match.
In an interview, Lee Ye-won said, "I'm happy that I was able to win multiple times in a season sooner than I expected. It's my first time to win wire-to-wire, and I know how difficult it is.
"I was worried about my opponent, so I just kept playing calmly without worrying about it, which is what led to my victory," he said with joy. On the 16th hole, a par 3 hole, he overcame the crisis he faced with a mistake, saying, "My tee shot went left.
I got pulled and missed the green and then I was embarrassed with a bad approach on my second shot, but I just tried to stay calm and carry on and I think I wrapped it up nicely for par.”
On the 5th of this month, she spoke about the reversal loss she suffered during the final round of the JLPGA Tour's major tournament, the World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup 2024.
Yewon said, "I came back with some disappointment, but this victory has erased that feeling. I played alongside last year's JLPG money winner, Yamashita Miyu, and I watched her closely.
"My tee shot was accurate and I was confident in my putting," he said. "The wind was very strong, so even a small mistake could lead to a big risk, which was a bit disconcerting."
So my mentality was a little shaken, and my desire to get a birdie was so strong that I kept aiming for the pin, which led to another mistake, and I think that's why I sadly missed out on the win.
Lee Ye Won, who is touring overseas for the first time, said, "I haven't been to America yet, but if I were to go overseas in the future, I think I would choose Japan."
Heavy rain fell during the second round, but by the third round, over 36,600 spectators had gathered, setting a new record for the tournament's attendance.
