South Korea to digitalize logistics centers as small and medium-sized retailers adopt international standard barcodes
The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Small Business Market Promotion Corporation (SMAJ) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to promote the use of barcodes by the international distribution standardization organization GS1 in order to strengthen the competitiveness of small businesses.
The agreement calls for the introduction of GS1 barcodes for products traded at the Small and Medium-sized Distribution Joint Wholesale Logistics Centers, which have been established in 38 locations nationwide to support small and medium-sized businesses.
The company will lay the foundation for providing unified product information to the 42,000 small and medium-sized supermarkets nationwide that use the logistics center.
This will allow similar products sold in small and medium-sized supermarkets nationwide to be categorized by region and sales area.
It will be possible to extract and analyze sales data from across the country by size and product group. Based on the results of this analysis, it will be possible to order popular items, make joint purchases, and add recommendation functions.
It is expected that this will enable the company to provide products at a lower unit price than small-scale orders per item. The Korea Logistics Promotion Agency, which represents Korea and is a member of GS1, plans to install a digital logistics system at the logistics center in the future.
In order to build a system for the supply chain, the company plans to support the construction of a product information database using GS1 barcodes. It will also work with Xiao Zhenggong to support regional logistics centers, wholesalers, small and medium-sized supermarkets, and retailers.
We will also be holding information sessions on GS1 barcodes aimed at car enthusiasts and others.
