Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung tells President Yoon Seok-yeol, ”Not keeping the promise to record the preamble of the Constitution on May 18 is a crime worse than fraud” (South Korea)
On May 18, the 44th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (opposition party), presented President Yoon Seok-yeol with his presidential election pledges.
Lee also urged the government to fulfill its promise to "record the preamble of the Constitution in the spirit of May 18." After attending the 44th anniversary May 18 Democratization Movement commemoration ceremony held at the Gwangju National Cemetery on the same day,
He held a press conference and said, "Even when an individual borrows 100,000 won, if they do not keep their promise they will be punished, but to not keep a promise in exchange for being entrusted with national sovereignty is a criminal act more serious than fraud."
Lee said, "I am truly grateful that President Yoon Seok-yeol attended today's ceremony," but added, "I will definitely ensure that the spirit of the May 18 Democratization Movement is passed down through the Constitution."
"Whether or not we mention the recording of the preamble of the Constitution today, it is something that the Yoon Seok-yeol administration has been able to clearly and publicly convey to the sovereigns of the Republic of Korea since it started," he said.
"It is a formal promise," he continued, "but we must not just repeat words, but put them into practice and fulfill our promise with action. We have plenty of time. And we must make our promise public."
"A lot of time has passed since we formally established that promise. Now is the time to keep that promise," Lee said. "We must ensure that the horrific history of state violence and the noble sacrifices and dedication made in resistance to it are included in the Constitution of the Republic of Korea," he said.
"We must record this in the preamble and ensure that mass massacres of our people are not allowed with bayonets provided by the Korean people," he said.
Lee said, "The May 18 Democratization Movement in Gwangju was a movement in which the Korean people expressed their desire to protect the lives of the people.
It is an act of state violence and treason that used the power and bayonets gained to kill and injure citizens.
"We will reaffirm our pledge that we will never tolerate any authority that challenges our people and sovereignty," he said.
