He spoke with Tottori Prefecture Governor Shinji Hirai, who is attracting attention as an excellent local government for overcoming low birth rates, and decided to work together to resolve the low birth rate issue.
Governor Lee said, "Tottori Prefecture's example of overcoming low birth rates has been attracting a lot of attention in South Korea."
"We have declared our war against child rearing and have put forward bold policies, but we have taken the example of Tottori Prefecture into consideration," he said. In 2010, Tottori Prefecture declared itself the "Child-rearing Kingdom of Tottori Prefecture" and has produced various policies.
In particular, the core of Tottori Prefecture's policy is focused on "childbirth and childcare services" that support women to be able to have children, rather than providing cash assistance.
Meanwhile, North Gyeongsang Province also announced the "100 Major Low Birthrate War Implementation Strategies" on the 13th of this month, and is swiftly implementing a comprehensive plan that includes the entire process from meeting to marriage, housing, and child-rearing.
Governor Lee said, "North Gyeongsang Province and Tottori Prefecture are very similar not only in their environmental conditions, but also in their awareness of low birth rates and policy approaches. We will immediately dispatch civil servants to the two regions so that they can work together."
Governor Hirai responded, "I am in sympathy with North Gyeongsang Province's declaration of a fight against low birth rates, and I would like to actively promote the sisterhood relationship between the two regions in childcare policies."
"I hope that through mutual cooperation, we will be able to overcome the low birth rate and expand our cooperation to various other areas," he said. Governor Lee visited Japan last year as chairman of the Council of City and Province Governors (South Korea).
He met with Governor Hirai, who was the chairman of the National Governors' Association (Japan), and made a surprise agreement to resume the suspended Japan-Korea Governors' Association, and continued to exchange views.
