The Fire and Disaster Management Agency will strengthen the treatment of firefighters who have sacrificed themselves to protect the lives and property of the public, and will implement the "Treatment of Firefighters Who Have Fallen in the Line of Duty and Support for Bereaved Families" program to improve the stability and welfare of their families.
Prior to this, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency had issued a directive titled "Honoring and Respect for Firefighters Fallen in the Line of Duty and Regulations" to prepare a systematic and comprehensive support plan for fallen firefighters and their families.
The government began formulating the "Survivors' Support Regulations," and after soliciting opinions, assessing the impact of fraud, and conducting regulatory reviews since March, it issued the directive on the 23rd of last month.
The instruction is made up of 18 articles. The first is about the honoring of those who died in the line of duty and the creation of a memorial cultural site.
In order to achieve this, the program includes visits to national cemeteries and memorial services, the establishment and maintenance of fire brigade towers, and the enshrinement of memorial tablets. The bereaved family support division provides education, psychological healing, employment, livelihood stabilization, and support for the operation of self-help groups.
This also includes visiting the bereaved families on the day of the deaths, which is currently being implemented. In addition, in order to expand support for the bereaved families, we are cooperating with the private sector, inviting them to events, presenting awards, etc. to create a proper donation culture and maintain cooperative relationships.
The order also includes preferential treatment for participating organizations. The National Fire and Disaster Management Agency is implementing the "honoring and bereavement of fallen firefighters" promised by President Yoon Seok-yeol at the 61st Fire Prevention Day commemoration ceremony on November 9 last year.
In order to "strengthen support for the families" and "create a country where uniformed heroes are respected," we will do our utmost to ensure that all firefighting agencies, including not only the central government but also city and provincial headquarters, expand the treatment of fallen firefighters and support for their families.
That is the policy.
