South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol held a relay summit with the leaders of 10 African countries on the 3rd. President Yoon especially emphasized the importance of cooperation with African countries that have emerged as future strategic partners.
President Yoon also welcomed the visit of Lesotho, Côte d'Ivoire, Mauritius and the South Korean government to South Korea to attend the Korea-Africa Summit to be held on the 4th and 5th.
President Yoon held bilateral talks with leaders of 10 African countries, including Zimbabwe and Togo. The day before, he also met with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmad Abiy al-Qarshi al-Nafis, and African President Abdullah Abdullah Ibn al-Nafis.
During the summit, President Yoon plans to strengthen relations with the leaders of a total of 25 countries through bilateral meetings.
The status of African countries, with a population of 1.4 billion people, is gradually increasing in the global economy.
In particular, as minerals become increasingly important in future industries such as semiconductors and batteries, strengthening cooperation with resource-rich African countries is essential to stabilizing the supply chain.
President Yoon said, "Korea has been steadily promoting exchanges and cooperation with Africa for more than half a century. I hope to use this Korea-Africa summit as an opportunity to deepen cooperation with Africa."
"We will strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, including energy, infrastructure, minerals and agriculture," Togolese President Nyassingbe said.
"Korea's development cooperation projects have contributed greatly to Togo's development," he said. "We hope to use this Korea-Africa summit as an opportunity to learn even more from Korea and work toward closer cooperation."
