Korean Medical Association leadership urges support for mass clinic closures: ”I'll go to prison. Don't become a disgrace to your superiors”
Park Yong-eon, vice president of the Korean Medical Association (KMA), said, "I will go to prison," urging association members to support the mass closure of clinics.
On the 10th, Vice Chairman Park posted on his SNS account, "I will be the one to go to prison. Don't become a disgraceful senior.
The 18th is the day that the Medical Association announced the simultaneous closure of all clinics and the holding of a general rally. The Medical Association announced the simultaneous closure of all clinics on the 18th at the National Physician Representatives Conference held the previous day.
"The Korean Medical Association will take the lead and herald the beginning of a struggle to save medical care in the Republic of Korea," he said. In response, the government has issued orders to close clinics and to notify clinics of closure, and has taken strict measures against collective actions.
"We must protect the lives and health of the people," said Jeong Byung-wan, director of the health and medical policy office at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, during a briefing by the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters for Physicians on the 10th.
"It is the government's constitutional responsibility to take action. We have no choice but to respond firmly to refusals to provide group medical treatment."
He continued, "Each city and province will hold a collective action teaser day for medical institutions under their jurisdiction based on Article 59, Clause 1 of the Medical Care Act.
On June 18th, the government issued an order to medical institutions to continue medical treatment without closing, and made it a rule that medical institutions that still wanted to close on that day must notify the government by June 13th, three days before the order.
"It will be," he revealed.
