Seoul National University Hospital, Bundang, labor union protests Seoul Medical University professor's plan to close clinics... ”Hippocrates' Weeping” sign reappears (South Korea)
In response to the recent announcement by professors at Seoul Medical University that they would be taking a collective leave of absence, the labor union at Seoul National University Hospital in Bundang called on employees to refuse to cooperate with the leave.
They have posted large letters (posters) in the hospital entitled "Pokrates' Lament" to protest against the professors' decision.
More than four medical departments at the Eul University Hospital are scheduled to close. A source told South Korean media outlet Yonhap News, "Until now, they had said that four departments would be closed. However, today,
"When I looked around the hospital, I found that more and more departments were planning to close. With less than a week until the closure date (based on business days), the hospital is in chaos."
The labor union called on staff to refuse to cooperate with any changes to the medical schedule due to the professor's absence.
The statement clarified the union's position that professors should directly inform patients. A source said, "Professors at Seoul National University Hospital were also absent on April 30. At the time, the professors' emergency response committee
"And they promised the union that there would be no more closures. But now, just a few weeks later, they're saying they'll be closing again."
He also said, "Usually, we see 7,000 patients a day, but when you add up all the appointments for tests, treatments, and surgeries, the number of patients who miss a day is about 2,000.
"We need to reschedule 1,000 appointments. This change process is causing a lot of criticism (from patients) and it's a lot of work for the nurses," he said.
In addition, "Some wards have been closed due to the departure of medical residents (trainees), leaving staff unstaffed.
"The professor's suspension will have a direct impact on staff," he added.
The hospital explained that it had asked employees not to cooperate with the change in medical practice. The labor union posted a statement titled "Hippocrates' Weeping" in the hospital.
The protest letter reads, "We denounce the illegal strike resolution of the ward. The only people who suffer from the closure are our patients and colleagues!" The Hippocratic Oath contains the ethics that doctors must abide by.
This oath includes the following: "I will choose treatments that I know will benefit my patients and never choose treatments that I know will cause harm. If I break this oath, I will receive the opposite fate."
Regarding the professors' reactions to the notices, a person involved said, "Some professors have rescinded their closures, while others have taken a hard line and directly rescheduled medical appointments."
The Bundang Seoul National University Hospital Labor Union is an independent organization with 3,100 members. The Seoul National University Hospital Labor Union is affiliated with the Public Transport Workers' Union Medical Solidarity Headquarters, which is the labor union of Seoul National University Hospital.
It is said to be different from the branch.
