From K-TV series to K-variety shows...the world is currently experiencing a ”K-remake boom”
A "K-remake boom" is happening around the world. A wide variety of K-content IP (intellectual property rights), from movies, TV series, and variety shows, are being remade to meet audiences.
JTBC's popular TV series "SKY Castle" has been confirmed to be remade and broadcast in Japan this coming July. "SKY Castle" recorded a non-terrestrial viewer rating of 23.8% when it was broadcast in Korea.
According to global creative studio SLL, the Japanese version of "SKY Castle" has cast popular Japanese actress Nao Matsushita as the lead actor.
The production will be handled by TV Asahi, Japan's leading commercial broadcasting station. Park Jun-seo, head of SLL's production department, said, "We are very grateful to TV Asahi for forming this partnership.
"Starting with the remake of 'SKY Castle,' we will continue to plan, develop, and produce works that are competitive in the global market," they said.
"Paradise Island," a Vietnamese romance variety show reminiscent of Netflix's "Escape from the Island," is also a hot topic.
The Vietnamese local romance variety show is co-produced by Vietnam's production company Cat Tien Sa and national broadcasting channel VTV3 in cooperation with the Korean broadcasting station JTBC's variety studio SAY.
"Paradise Island" is a show that depicts men and women competing for love on an island, similar to "Escape from the Island."
Following the success of the global hit "Escape from the Island," JTBC is paying close attention to whether it can make "Paradise Island" a success as well.
MBC's music variety show "King of Masked Singer" is the show that has sold the most remake rights. According to MBC, "King of Masked Singer" has been licensed in 57 countries.
The series is currently being broadcast in 56 countries, including the UK, the US, Norway, and Panama.
The show has been hugely popular, with 11 seasons under the title "Singer."
