100 days until the start of the 2024 Homeless World Cup in Seoul... 49 countries participating = South Korea
The Seoul 2024 Homeless World Cup is scheduled to be held for eight days from September 21 to 28 at Hanyang University Stadium in South Korea. This year marks the 19th Homeless World Cup.
The tournament will be held in Seoul for the first time in Asia, following Amsterdam, Glasgow, Oslo, Mexico City and Sacramento in the US last year. 64 teams from 49 countries will participate.
The tournament, which is being held this year, includes women's teams from 20 countries, the highest number of any tournament to date. The organizer, the Big Issue Korea, launched the project in December last year to promote homelessness in the UK.
After Seoul was confirmed as the host city by the World Cup Foundation, an organizing committee made up of professionals from various fields is currently preparing tournament games and a global conference between the participating countries.
The players participating in the Homeless World Cup represent a diverse range of homelessness as defined by each country.
The Republic of Korea team is made up of young people preparing for independence, youth living away from home, refugees, and migrants.
The program is aimed at people who are in the blind spot of housing rights, such as homeless workers. Applications are currently being accepted to select players for the national team.
More than 10,000 university students and volunteer citizens are expected to participate, and they will be recruited through the Hanyang University Community Service Corps. Former national soccer team player Ken Rhee, chairman of the organization, said, "Home
Through this soccer festival, we hope to see the players participating in the World Cup working hard to achieve new growth.
"We hope that this will be an opportunity for people to give back to their loved ones and to participate in this human TV series that is filled with warm support," he said.
According to the Homeless World Cup Foundation, since the first Homeless World Cup was held in 2003, the lives of 1.2 million people have been changed.
The most famous player associated with the Homeless World Cup is Bebe, who many fans remember as a teammate of Park Jisung at Manchester United.
Bebe grew up in a homeless shelter and played for Portugal in the Homeless World Cup and European Cup. He went from being an unknown to playing for Manchester United.
When the Homeless World Cup was held, it became a big hot topic. The Homeless World Cup is a "street soccer" game played in a stadium 22 meters wide and 16 meters long, with four players playing against each other.
The game is played under the Futsal Rules. There are walls on all four sides, so the ball bounces back and forth without going out. It is a very exciting modified futsal game with a 7-minute half-time and a 1-minute break in between.
The format is as follows: Nine cups will be awarded based on ranking, and all teams will play an equal number of matches.
