Police have arrested a man in his 60s who brutally killed his pet dog in an orchard on Jeju Island in order to eat it.
On the 13th, Jeju Dongbu Police Station filed charges against a man in his 60s for violating the Animal Protection Act.
The man is suspected of killing a dog at around 10 a.m. yesterday at an orchard in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.
When the animal protection group "Jeju Haengbogine Abandoned Dog Shelter" received a report and visited the man's orchard, one of the dogs had already been killed.
At the scene, an axe and a kitchen knife that were believed to have been used to kill the dogs were found. An animal protection group said, "One of the dogs had already been killed and cooked in a pot, and the head was cut off.
"The other dogs, who saw the whole thing right before their eyes, were shaking and unable to move," the report said. The animal protection group reported the man to the police and charged him with the crime.
The two dogs were rescued by a group. During police investigations, the man was quoted as saying, "I wasn't feeling well so I thought I'd make dog meat soup and eat it."
Police are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the incident. Meanwhile, the "Special Act on the End of Dog Breeding, Slaughtering, and Distribution for the Purpose of Meat" will prohibit the keeping of dogs for meat from February 2027.
