South Korean Prime Minister: ”Doctors do not have unlimited freedom, but have legal restrictions to protect lives”
South Korean Prime Minister Han Deok-soo said on the 14th, "Doctors who deal with lives do not have unlimited freedom, but are subject to constitutional and legal restrictions in order to protect the lives of the people."
Prime Minister Han visited Seoul Boramae Hospital on the same day and emphasized, "The right to life is the most fundamental of fundamental rights, and the state exists for the lives and safety of its people."
Prime Minister Han's on-site inspection took place amid a situation in which professors at Seoul National University's College of Medicine and the Korean Medical Association had decided to close clinics en masse on the 17th and 18th of this month, respectively.
Prime Minister Han said, "Protecting the lives and health of the people is the legal responsibility of the medical community and an important promise to patients. The trust of patients is what doctors dedicate their lives to."
"This is the reason and result of my dedication to medical practice," he said. He then appealed to doctors to "withdraw their decision to suspend practice and stay by the side of patients."
He also reiterated to the interns who had submitted their resignations and left the training hospital that "there will be no disciplinary or disadvantages if they return."
