Three middle school girls were arrested by police after getting into a car parked on the street, smoking a cigarette, and then driving. The Daejeon Central Police Station arrested them on suspicion of driving without a license and attempted theft on the 14th.
The police have arrested A (14) and two others and are currently investigating. A and the others were found in a car parked on the street in a shopping street in Jung-gu, Daejeon at around 10 p.m. earlier this month.
The suspects entered the car, started the engine using a smart key, then moved the car back and forth several meters and smoked a cigarette. The girls saw that the side mirrors of the car were not folded down, so they opened the door.
A police source said, "The owner of the car had gone to relieve himself, but was surprised to see his car running and ran over to find it had been stolen by a middle school girl.
"The students were in the car and caught one of them. The other two did not run away," he said. "The owner of the car caught the students and called the police on his mobile phone, and they were taken to the police station where they are being questioned."
After an investigation, the police handed the three over to their guardians. The junior high school girls had not been drinking or using drugs at the time of the crime. One of the three was a juvenile delinquent (aged 10 or over) who is not criminally responsible.
A police official said, "Although the vehicle was not driven and no damage was caused, the fact that he started the engine and tried to move the vehicle is deemed to be driving without a license and attempted theft.
"Considering that he had been smoking indoors and that some damage had been caused to the interior of the car, we are conducting further investigations with the possibility of applying the charge of property damage," he said.
