Worker with broken leg has to have surgery 20 hours later after being unable to find a hospital to take him in - South Korea
A worker who broke a bone at the Yeosu National Industrial Complex in Cheonnam was unable to receive surgery in the area and was taken to Siheung in Gyeonggi Province, where he died of necrosis.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) Yeosu Branch Office on the 26th, on the 3rd of this month, at around 5:15 pm, a 50-year-old man was killed in a car crash at the Yeosu National Industrial Complex.
A teenage worker, Mr. A, had his right leg caught in a conveyor belt. He was then treated by 119 and taken to Yeosu General Hospital at around 6:20 pm, an hour later.
However, the hospital said, "He should be transferred to a specialized hospital for surgery," and decided to transfer him to nearby Jeonnam National University Hospital, Chosun University Hospital, and other hospitals that can perform specialized surgery.
When they contacted university hospitals, they received only replies that they could not accept patients. Then, at 7 p.m., a hospital in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do, finally said, "We can perform surgery."
He arrived at the hospital in Siheung at around 11 p.m. and underwent vascular repair surgery the next morning and fracture surgery the next afternoon. However, necrosis had already progressed, so his right leg was amputated below the knee.
20 hours had passed between the accident and the surgery, meaning that the prime time was missed. Furthermore, on the 10th, Mr. A underwent a second surgery at another hospital to amputate his leg above the knee.
A and his family raised the issue, saying, "The nearest university hospital was unable to accept him immediately due to the withdrawal of medical residents (trainees), and we ended up having to have him amputated."
Chonnam National University Hospital and Chosun University Hospital, which said they could not perform the surgery, are of the opinion that there is no connection between the withdrawal of medical residents and the refusal to transfer to other hospitals.
