According to the Jeju Island Fire and Safety Headquarters, at around 1:03 pm on the same day, three people driving a car were killed on a road in Nansan-ri, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo City.
The sudden downpour caused people to leave their cars parked and go out onto the road. In Seongsan-eup and Daejeong-eup, one vehicle was also stranded on flooded roads, and two drivers had to evacuate.
On that day, over 30 cases of road and house flooding occurred on Cheju Island. Two trees along the road were also blown down by the strong winds.
In some areas, such as Mt. Halla, water from the sewer system backed up, flooding roads. A weather warning was issued and access to all seven hiking trails was restricted. On that day, 200 people were on Mt. Halla.
In Seogwipo and Seongsan, 55.5 mm and 81 mm of rain fell per hour, respectively, making them the first and second highest hourly rainfall amounts on record for the month of June.
As the rain subsided, the Korea Meteorological Administration changed the heavy rain warning in the mountainous areas of Cheju Island to a heavy rain advisory at 3:50 p.m. The heavy rain advisory for other areas was lifted. However, strong winds were expected to continue.
A strong wind warning was issued for Jeju Island from 4 p.m. The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that the rain will continue on Jeju Island until Monday.
