Korea sues soccer coach Son: ”I wasn't trying to receive a settlement”
A recording of a conversation between Son Woong-jung, the head coach of the Korean SON Soccer Academy, who is being sued for alleged child abuse, and the father of the victim, Mr. A, regarding the amount of the settlement was made public.
In an interview with SBS Morning Wide broadcast on the 28th, Mr. A's father said, "The family was going through a very difficult time.
"My wife and I have now become shameless, ridiculous parents who try to take money from others," said A's father, adding, "I feel very frustrated."
A's mother was seen in tears. According to A's father, Son's lawyer and two coaches came to apologize to A after undergoing police investigation. A's side has been apologizing to Son and the coaches.
In March of this year, he filed a complaint with the police against the two men on suspicion of child abuse under the Child Welfare Act. The gist of the complaint was that "in March, during a training camp in Okinawa, Japan, the three men had verbally and physically assaulted him."
On the same day's broadcast, Mr. A's father explained the circumstances of his meeting with Manager Son's side. He said that he met only with two coaches and a lawyer, excluding Manager Son, and that a settlement was discussed at that time.
A's father said, "At the time, Son's side agreed to a settlement of 15 to 20 million won (approximately 175 to 233 million won) on the conditions of a petition for non-penalty, a guarantee of confidentiality for the media, and no disciplinary action by the Korea Football Association.
He continued, "How much do you have to look down on people and make light of them to offer to settle on these terms without even a single person properly apologizing?"
He claimed, "I was so angry that I said, 'Then give me 500 million won (58.2 million yen)'"
Mr. A's father said, "My child has done nothing wrong and is a victim of child abuse.
He is the perpetrator, but secondary victimization has already occurred. "At first, he was a really active child who laughed a lot and was charming, but now he is in a situation where he needs to honestly receive treatment," he said.
He also said, "When (Director Son) made such abusive remarks, I deeply regret that I did not gather the courage to sue him on the spot," and "With the heart of a fan,
He said he was happy to be accepted into the academy because he felt that "if they taught Son Heung-min, they would be able to teach me well."
"It was wrong for us to have been involved in such a case. We sincerely hope that no more victims like us will arise," he added. Dispatch reported that in April of this year, A's father and Song's legal team
The recording of the conversation by his attorney, Kim Hyun-woo, was posted on the YouTube channel. The two coaches, including Son and his son Son Heung-yoon, the SON Soccer Academy coach, said they had not committed any acts of violence against Mr. A.
The father of Mr. A demanded 500 million won in settlement money from Director Son.
"If that's the case, 15 million won would be a reasonable amount," he said, but added, "(Son Heung-min) is a global sports star, and manager Son Woon-jung is also famous.
Director Song said in a statement to the media, "I would like to express my deepest apologies to the child and his family who were emotionally hurt," but added, "There are many parts of the plaintiff's allegations that are not true, so
"The Academy has not distorted or concealed the facts and is sincerely and proactively cooperating with the investigation."
