Korean Medical Association expresses concern to People's Power over medical school enrollment increase and nursing law (South Korea)
On the 4th, the Korean Medical Association (KMA) Chairman Lim Hyun-Tae met with People Power Rep. Kim Mi-ae, who is the ruling party secretary of the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee, and announced the plan to increase the number of medical school admissions.
"The government's unilateral increase in the number of nurses has led to medical students and residents abandoning their futures and leaving their training sites and lecture halls for the sake of normalizing medical care," Lim said.
Regarding the recently proposed nursing law, he said, "It violates the constitutional principle of prohibiting blanket delegation, shakes the foundations of the medical license system, and weakens the medical profession.
"It will bring about major chaos in the medical system, including encouraging illegal medical practices," he said. The Medical Association also announced on the same day that it will implement a bill to resolve the current medical vacuum caused by the government's erroneous medical policy.
He called on the National Assembly to take an interest and cooperate. Rep. Kim said, "I want you to come to the table for dialogue without preconditions and work with us to find common ground. No matter how difficult it may be, I want to do what is right for the patients.
I want you to make sure you protect it."
