1,000 suspected food poisoning cases in elementary, junior high and high schools... Norovirus detected in kimchi from school lunches in Namwon, South Korea
More than 1,000 people have been diagnosed with food poisoning suspected to be linked to school lunches in the Namwon region of North Jeolla Province in South Korea over the past three days.
According to Namwon City on the 6th, the provisional count of suspected food poisoning cases in local elementary, middle and high schools was 1,024.
This means that the number of suspected food poisoning cases has increased by nearly 800 in the three days since the first suspected food poisoning case was reported. The number of schools with suspected food poisoning cases has also increased from 15 to 24.
The first suspected cases of food poisoning were reported on the 2nd. Students and staff at these schools showed symptoms of suspected food poisoning, including vomiting, fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
After receiving the report, Namwon City launched an epidemiological investigation to determine the cause, and discovered that norovirus was detected in the kimchi delivered to both schools.
The company confirmed that the virus had spread to the U.S. and temporarily suspended the manufacture, distribution, and sale of all of the products from the company in question. A Namwon City official said, "We plan to conduct additional epidemiological investigations to determine the exact cause.
"We will do everything in our power to prevent the spread of food poisoning."
