Three Koreans on board a yacht bound for Jeju from Taiwan go missing; search by South Korean Coast Guard difficult
A yacht carrying three South Koreans that had departed Taiwan and was heading for Jeju Island in South Korea has gone missing, and the South Korean Coast Guard is conducting a search.
The 19.5-ton yacht A, which was scheduled to arrive at Dotou Port in Jeju City from Taiwan,
He went missing at around 4:42 p.m. on the 1st, and the Maritime Police began a search with seven vessels, including a 3,000-ton patrol vessel. After receiving a report from the Yacht Association, the Maritime Police deployed search vessels and personnel to the scene.
Sailing yacht A is a wind-powered vessel that uses sails to move forward. It departed Taiwan on the 4th and arrived at 3:00 a.m. southwest of Mara Island at 10 a.m. on the 6th.
The vessel has not been heard from since its last signal was received 89 kilometers out to sea. It was scheduled to enter Dodu Port in Jeju City at around 8 a.m. on the 8th.
The Coast Guard believes there is a high possibility that the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which transmits the yacht's position information, is malfunctioning.
Furthermore, the contract for the satellite phone on the yacht A had expired, leaving the only means of communication available on board the yacht to be very high frequency (VHF) communication.
Bad weather has made the search difficult, and the Coast Guard has deployed seven vessels and a HYERI helicopter to carry out the search.
The search for the yacht continues in poor weather conditions. In the area where the yacht was last contacted, strong winds of 10 to 12 meters per second and waves up to 3 meters high are blowing, making it very difficult for the search team.
Due to the worsening weather, the Coast Guard's HYERI helicopter had to return to base after takeoff.
