「どうやって上るんだ」…「地獄の上り坂」バス路線廃止に住民が反発=韓国
”How do we get up there?” South Korean residents protest against the abolition of ”hellish uphill” bus route
It has been reported that the city of Seoul is considering discontinuing a bus route on the hill in front of Sangmyung University in Seoul, known as the "Hell's Climb," due to a series of bus slippage accidents.
Residents and students are expressing their disapproval. According to Channel A on the 8th, the city of Seoul is considering suspending bus service on a section of the slope between the main and rear gates of Seoul Sangmyung University.
It has been pointed out that the ramp is dangerous because it is close to an elementary school, has a narrow roadway, and has points where vehicles are concentrated.
The maximum slope is 16 degrees. Three bus slip accidents have occurred on this road since September last year.
On the morning of the 5th of this month, a maul bus (community bus) skidded while going up a nearby hill and crashed into the stairs of a nearby house. Two passengers were seriously injured in the accident.
Thirty-five other passengers and the bus driver sustained minor injuries. However, local residents and students are confused. One resident said, "It takes a lot of courage to climb up here, but if the bus disappears, it will be a disaster.
"It's slippery, so it goes without saying that it's difficult on rainy days," he said. A student at Sangmyung University expressed concern, saying, "I'm afraid I'll be late for class, and I'll be exhausted physically." An official at Sangmyung University said,
If buses are eliminated, the number of private cars will increase, and safety issues will become more serious." In response to this, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has stated that safety is a priority. A Seoul Metropolitan Government official said, "We are taking measures to protect the safety of our citizens over their convenience.
"We are in a situation where we have no choice but to choose safety," he said, adding that there is a high possibility that routes will be adjusted. The Seoul Metropolitan Government is reportedly considering alternative options such as buses.
