Pesticide residue found in resident who fell seriously ill after eating duck meat... Police launch investigation (South Korea)
On the 15th, police launched an investigation after insecticide residue was found in the body of a resident who fell seriously ill after eating duck meat.
According to the Gyeongsangbuk-do National Police Agency on the 16th, a man was arrested in Pongsangbuk-do the previous day.
Pesticide residue was found in the stomachs of three women in their 60s and 70s who suffered cardiac arrest and muscular stiffness after eating duck meat at a restaurant in Bonghwa County.
Another woman who was with the three was also receiving treatment at a hospital in Bonghwa County, but her condition worsened and she was pronounced dead at 10:1 a.m. that day.
They were taken to the emergency room at Andong Hospital at around 4:00 a.m. The initial symptoms shared by the four were respiratory paralysis, drooling, and muscle stiffness. All of these symptoms were caused by eating or drinking organophosphates, which are insecticides.
The symptoms are as follows: Insecticides are chemicals that are effective in eliminating arthropods, such as insects that are harmful to humans, livestock, and crops. All three patients who were hospitalized the previous day were unconscious, while the other patient who was hospitalized that day was unconscious.
Police said the four were unable to speak. Medical staff at Andong Hospital sent gastric lavage fluid to the National Forensic Service for detailed testing, which revealed that the fluid was poisonous and contained insecticide.
An organophosphate drug was confirmed. Organophosphate drugs are substances that cannot be detected if they are mixed in small amounts with food. In light of this situation, the hospital stated, "We are certain that (a significant amount of) drugs were ingested.
In addition to organophosphates, an organochlorine drug called "endosulfan" was also found. There is no antidote for this drug, so the only thing you can do is wait for it to break down naturally in the body.
The medical team also handed over urine and blood samples to the National Forensic Service, which said they could not detect any pesticides and would re-examine the results on the same day.
On the day of the incident, the four were found to have shared duck meat with other members of the Respect for the Aged Day Association. Of the 41 members who had gathered at the event, only four were victims.
In order to identify the suspect, the police plan to interview members of the Respect for the Aged Day Hall and analyze security camera footage. A police source said, "We suspect that someone intentionally put pesticides in the food.
We believe this was the case and are investigating the matter."
