Pesticide residue found in resident who fell seriously ill after eating duck meat... Police launch investigation (South Korea)
On the 15th, police launched an investigation after insecticide residue was found in the body of a resident who fell seriously ill after eating duck meat.
According to the Gyeongsangbuk-do National Police Agency on the 16th, a man was arrested in Pongsangbuk-do the previous day.
Pesticide residue was found in the stomachs of three women in their 60s and 70s who suffered cardiac arrest and muscular stiffness after eating duck meat at a restaurant in Bonghwa County.
Another woman who was with the three was also receiving treatment at a hospital in Bonghwa County, but her condition worsened and she was pronounced dead at 10:1 a.m. that day.
They were taken to the emergency room at Andong Hospital at around 4:00 a.m. The initial symptoms shared by the four were respiratory paralysis, drooling, and muscle stiffness. All of them were suspected of having eaten or consumed organophosphate pesticides.
Insecticides are chemicals that are used to eliminate arthropods, such as insects, that are harmful to humans, livestock, and crops.
All three patients who had been admitted the previous day were unconscious, and the other patient who had been admitted that day
Police said the four were unable to speak. Medical staff at Andong Hospital sent gastric lavage fluid to the National Forensic Service for detailed testing, which revealed that the fluid was a pesticide.
The organophosphate drug was confirmed to be present in the body. Organophosphate drugs are substances that cannot be detected if they are mixed in small amounts with food. Given this situation, the hospital said, "We have no choice but to conclude that (a significant amount of) drugs was definitely ingested."
In addition to organophosphates, an organochlorine drug called "endosulfan" was also found. There is no antidote for this drug, so the only thing to do is wait for it to break down naturally in the body.
The medical team also handed over urine and blood samples to the National Forensic Service, which found no traces of pesticides and decided to retest the results on the same day.
On the day of the incident, the four were found to have shared duck meat with members of a senior citizens' home (a Korean elderly welfare facility).
Of the 41 people, only four were reported to be victims. In order to identify the suspects, the police plan to interview members of the Respect for the Aged Day Hall and analyze security camera footage.
"We are investigating the possibility that someone intentionally put pesticides in the food."
