Only 5.6% of North Korean defectors living in Seoul own their own homes

It has been revealed that only 5.6% of North Korean defectors living in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, live in their own homes.
According to the "Regional Survey Report on the Status of North Korean Defectors - Seoul Edition," only 5.6 percent of North Korean defectors living in Seoul last year were living in their own homes.
This percentage is significantly lower than the 21.4% of North Korean defectors who live in homes that are in their own name.
The rate of people living alone will drop to about one-quarter of what it was in 2016. Even if people who live in homes owned by their parents, relatives, or friends are included, the rate remains at just 6.4%.
Meanwhile, 65.7% of defectors living in Seoul live in houses or rented apartments assigned by Hanawon.
Of these, 24.8% said they were living in homes owned by others, suggesting that defectors are also being affected by the soaring housing prices in the Seoul area.
Furthermore, in response to the question about "the support needed to live a better life in South Korea," the percentage of defectors who chose "support for housing issues" was high in Seoul, with 10% of defectors choosing this option.
The need for housing assistance tends to increase the longer someone has lived in the country, ranging from 7.9% of those who have lived in the country for less than three years to 14.3% of those who have lived in the country for 10 years or more.
The Hana Foundation said, "Counselors specializing in North Korean defectors who conducted on-site surveys said that defectors who had been living in the country for a long time reported problems with insufficient space and dilapidated rental properties.
The report was compiled from data from a survey of North Korean defectors conducted by the Inter-Korean Hana Foundation last year, which looked at 388 defectors living in the Seoul area.
The data was extracted and reanalyzed.
