The number of passenger flights of 29 domestic airlines increased compared to the same period last year, with China Airlines and Chengdu Airlines in particular seeing increases of more than 30%.
Passenger traffic in the second quarter increased 11.9% year-on-year to 173 million people (total number of passengers, hereafter the same), up 7.7% from the same period in 2019 before the COVID-19 virus outbreak.
Domestic passenger traffic increased 6.0% year-on-year to 158 million people, up 10.6% from the same period in 2019. International passenger traffic increased 153.8% year-on-year to 15.55 million people.
The top three airlines in terms of passenger traffic were Southern Airlines, Eastern Airlines, and Air China, which carried 29 million, 27 million, and 20 million passengers, respectively.
The top three airlines account for 44% of total passenger traffic. The association said, "The impact of the COVID-19 virus has almost subsided, and passenger traffic has recovered overall in the second quarter of this year."
In addition, an increase in passenger numbers is expected during the period when the special summer transportation system "Natsuun" operates (July 1st to August 31st), with passenger transport volume during the same period predicted to reach approximately 136 million people.
