”The price of hairtail is half the price we charge”... A restaurant employee refutes the controversy over boiled hairtail (South Korea)
Recently in Korea, a restaurant employee who caused controversy by accusing the restaurant of "overcharging" the price for a stewed hairtail dish because the amount served was too small compared to the price has refuted the allegation, saying that the price is not excessive.
Prior to this, a post titled 'Are you satisfied with a 39,000 won (approximately 4,421 yen) braised hairtail?' had recently appeared in an online community.
The article became a hot topic. The photo posted by the poster, Mr. A, showed a dish of braised hairtail fish, which included two or three slices of hairtail fish tossed in a spicy sauce, potatoes, radishes, and other vegetables.
Mr. A, who ordered simmered hairtail fish for delivery, said, "There were two pieces of hairtail fish. When I received the delivery and opened the package, I wondered if that was one serving or if I had received the wrong one.
"I thought about it and immediately called the restaurant. They told me, 'The price of hairtail fish has been high recently.' One is 40,000 won (about 4,534 yen), so two pieces are 39,000 won each," he explained.
In response, on the 18th, Mr. B, who revealed that he was a staff member of the restaurant in question, said, "Our restaurant clearly indicates the country of origin as domestically produced on the menu on the delivery app itself. This hairtail is from Noriyaya.
We buy them from Noryangjin Fisheries Market for 35,000 won (about 3,967 yen) each and offer about half of them (to customers)."
He continued, "The price of this hairtail is just the price of the product itself, excluding the container, labor costs, rental costs, and side dishes.
It's about 45% of the meal cost. If we deliver one fish, even if we deduct the price of the hairtail and the delivery fee, the remaining amount is 30% of the sales price, and the margin is in the high teens after deducting other expenses.
" B said, "I don't know if I thought the price was so high that this incident was covered in the news and criticized. Perhaps the price of our domestic hairtail fish was so high that they were not willing to pay for it.
"I am posting this article with the desire to correct whether I received an excessive amount compared to sales figures in similar industries, or whether I did something wrong that warrants criticism in an article."
