Korea Gas Corporation succeeds in producing Korea's first 1-megawatt-class green hydrogen through water electrolysis on Cheju Island - Korean media
Korea Gas Corporation announced on the 26th that it has succeeded in producing green hydrogen using a 1-megawatt water electrolysis system, for the first time in Korea.
Hydrogen does not emit greenhouse gases such as carbon when used, making it the next-generation energy source for the carbon-neutral era.
However, the main method of production at present is to extract hydrogen from natural gas, which has the limitation of emitting carbon, which is why it is called "gray hydrogen."
To overcome this limitation, many countries and companies are developing production technology for so-called "green hydrogen," which uses solar, wind and other renewable energy sources to electrolyze water and emits no carbon.
However, mass production technology for megawatt-class power generation has not yet been commercialized. Korea Gas Corporation, a public enterprise that accounts for about 80% of the imports of natural gas, Korea's current energy source, is working to develop carbon-neutral power generation.
In preparation for the era of green hydrogen, we have been developing green hydrogen production technology. In 2020, we participated in the Green Hydrogen Production and Storage System Technology Development Consortium organized by the Jeju Energy Corporation.
The company will participate in the project and install a 1-megawatt-class next-generation water electrolysis facility using a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) in Jeju starting this month.
The plant has succeeded in producing 18kg of hydrogen per hour. The green hydrogen produced here will be supplied to the Hamdeok Green Hydrogen Charging Station in Jeju. 18kg of hydrogen is enough for one hydrogen bus.
This is the amount used per day. Based on the results of this demonstration study, KOGAS plans to work with participating companies to produce and supply enough green hydrogen to operate 30 hydrogen buses by 2025.
A corporation official said, "We are gradually building the foundation for the hydrogen business to meet the Korean government's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050," and added, "We hope to produce green hydrogen through this project."
"We will enhance our operational technology and pursue sustainable growth in the rapidly changing energy market."
