”We trusted him because he was a famous doctor”... Death in psychiatric hospital, family cries in South Korea
Police have launched an investigation after a complaint was filed alleging that a patient died at a hospital run by a famous Korean psychiatrist who appeared on television. The family said, "My sister died because of inadequate treatment.
According to Yonhap News on the 29th, a woman in her 30s, Ms. A, died at around 3:30 a.m. on May 27th at a hospital in Bucheon.
The hospital is run by the brothers of famous psychiatrists, Mr. B and Mr. A, who are there to treat diet pill addiction.
After conducting an autopsy on Mr. A, the National Forensic Service informed the police that he was "presumed to have died from pseudo-intestinal obstruction or other causes."
After being admitted to the hospital, Mr. A complained of difficulty in defecation and abdominal pain, and the day before his death he reported severe abdominal pain.
The family of Mr. A said, "The hospital neglected Mr. A, whose health condition had deteriorated, and he died," and last month, medical staff including Mr. B were arrested on suspicion of abandonment resulting in death and professional negligence resulting in death.
In a phone call with Yonhap News, Ms. A's older brother said, "I trusted the hospital because it was run by a famous psychiatrist, but my sister passed away in a sad state due to inadequate care."
The police obtained the hard disk of the security camera and medical records from the hospital, which they voluntarily submitted. The security camera footage shows Mr. A holding his stomach in the stabilization room and banging on the door.
The footage showed a nursing assistant and a guardian entering the room, giving him a sedative, and using coercive measures such as tying his hands, feet and chest to the bed. Two hours later, Mr. A was found unconscious with a swollen stomach and a nosebleed.
The hospital explained that "Mr. A had chronic constipation and had not complained of abdominal pain for a long time, so it was difficult to suspect intestinal obstruction and there was no problem with the treatment on the day of the accident."
The police plan to investigate both the plaintiff and the defendant separately, and then, after consulting with a medical specialist institution, to determine whether the hospital's actions were causally related to Mr. A's death.
