Reform New Party lawmaker Lee Jun-seok: ”My prediction was wrong... I underestimated President Yoon Seok-yeol too much” (South Korea)
On the 1st, Lee Jun-seok, a lawmaker from the New Reform Party, said about the prospects for internal conflicts in the People Power Party (ruling party) after the party convention, "This time, my predictions were wrong."
Rep. Lee, who served as the party chairman, once predicted that "Once Chairman Han Dong-hoon takes office, conflict within the party will escalate in earnest within a week."
On the 1st, Rep. Lee said on the CBS Radio program "Kim Hyun Jung's News Show" that "From the very first day, I have been working with Jeong Jom-sik, the policy committee member for the People's Power Party.
"I was mean to him over the issue of the chairman of the meeting," he said, adding, "Once again, I underestimated President Yoon Seok-yeol too much."
Lee said that he was considering replacing Jeong Jom-sik, chairman of the People's Power Policy Committee, which is showing signs of conflict between the pro-Yoon Seok-yeol and pro-Han Dong-hoon factions.
Regarding the controversy, he pointed out, "It's not even worth discussing. All that needs to be done is for Representative Han to say that he will appoint (the new policy committee chairman)."
He continued, "Chairman Chung will also know the nature of the party as a third-term lawmaker.
"The very fact that Kasuna is stirring up controversy is a ridiculous situation," he emphasized. In July 2021, when he was the head of the People's Power Party, Lee said that Kim Do-eup, chairman of the policy committee,
Regarding the appointment, he said, "I don't even remember who was there before. I just said, forget about the previous policy committee chair, and appoint a new chair like me.
He also advised, "Whether or not to remove Chairman Chung should not be a cause for controversy. If (Chairman Han) said, 'I will appoint so-and-so as chairman of the policy committee,'
"If he just says, 'I'll do it myself,' then it will be over. Because Representative Han is hesitating, we will have to confront each other with strength," he said.
Regarding the remarks made to that effect, he said, "If that is the case, it is truly regrettable. Is Chairman Chung doing something against the president's will? No. The president is certainly sending a certain signal."
Regarding the opposition from the People's Power regarding the special prosecution bill for Private Choi, which was publicly announced by Representative Han, Rep. Lee said, "There is no power to overcome the will of the people. If we can gather the consensus of the lawmakers, we can take one step forward."
I can't move forward."
