It has been 64 days since the bill was proposed by former Chairman Lee Jae-myung as the lead sponsor. The ruling and opposition parties are engaged in a war of words over the bill, which aims to provide 250,000 won to all Koreans.
Kim Hye-ran, spokesperson for the ruling People Power Party, said in a statement on the 3rd, "The Democratic Party of Korea has a 13 trillion won (approximately 1.4 trillion yen) current account.
"They finally forced through a money-spending law," he said, criticizing the Democratic Party, saying, "They stuck to the idea of borrowing money again, which will destroy the country."
He further stated, "The executive branch has the authority to create the budget, which is unconstitutional.
"There are many unreasonable elements, and it is a runaway that has ignored even the minimum level of consultation with the ruling party," he continued. "Typical populism will not only worsen the nation's finances, but will also lead to a decline in the nation's credibility," he said.
"The Democratic Party of Korea has no policy concerns about the people's lives or the future of the country, and instead just pushes along bad laws. All they have on their minds are political infighting and impeachment," he added.
Choi Min-seok, spokesman for the Democratic Party, also aimed his criticism at People Power.
In a written statement, spokesman Choi said, "Do you really hate spending money on the people?"
"The People's Power is denouncing the subsidy law for improving the vitality of people's lives as a 'cash handout.'" He also said, "The people's livelihoods have been ruined due to the incompetence of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration.
"Aren't they ashamed that the ruling party, which should be taking the lead in restoring life, is instead spitting on legislation to support the people's livelihood?" he said.
He continued, "The welfare recovery support funds will be provided in the form of regional promotion coupons rather than cash, and will help expand domestic demand.
"It is an economic policy that can restore not only the lives of the people but also the slumping tax revenue," he said, adding, "The People's Power Party, which has no people in mind, will unconditionally slam even civilian legislation if it is put forward by the opposition party."
However, since the Presidential Office is also opposed to the bill, it is highly likely that President Yoon will exercise his veto power (right to request a reconsideration).
