On the same day, the Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office, Shin Eun-seok, and the head of the Joint Investigation Team on Virtual Currency Crimes, Park Gun-wook, briefed the JFBA on the results of their work over the past year and their future plans.
The Supreme Prosecutors' Office (SPO) announced on July 26, 2023 that it will appoint the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office, the Financial Supervisory Service, the Korea Trade Commission, and the Korea Information Security Agency to oversee the investigation and reporting of the proposed law.
The ministry also launched a joint virtual currency crime investigative team consisting of more than 30 experts from seven related agencies, including the National Tax Agency, the National Customs Service, and the Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Over the past year, the joint investigation team has investigated all virtual currency exchanges, issuers, distributors, and depository companies.
As a result of the investigation into general crimes, 40 people were indicted for unfair cryptocurrency trading, including the “Coin King (Jon Barkim)” also known as “YON Sama Coin” and the “Cheongdam-dong Stock Rich Man” brother.
The police arrested 18 people, including his younger brother, and seized or confiscated 13 supercars and other items worth 141 billion won (US$132.5 million) in taxes.
On this day, the president stated that the government will work to eradicate virtual currency crimes and quickly establish a system to deal with unfair transactions, thereby taking the utmost in protecting virtual currency users.
In particular, he called for the early establishment of the new Virtual Currency User Protection Act, which came into force on the 19th of last month, and said, "Not only will we thoroughly investigate and eradicate unfair virtual currency trading, but we will also thoroughly investigate and eradicate unfair virtual currency trading."
"We also need to ensure that there are no gaps in the recovery of criminal proceeds, and do our utmost to correct market order and protect investors and other market participants," he said.
