Son of ”Onion Man” has master's degree revoked due to ”false documents” (South Korea)
The master's degree of Cho Won (27), the son of Cho Kuk, aka "Onion Man" and former South Korean Minister of Justice and head of the Fatherland Reform Party, has been revoked.
On the 8th, Yonsei University announced, "We held a fair admissions committee meeting for Cho Won and decided to cancel his admission."
According to Yonsei University's academic regulations, reasons for the cancellation of admission to undergraduate and graduate schools include false statements, forgery, or alteration of documents submitted for admission selection, proxy examinations, or cheating in examinations.
On July 10th of last year, when suspicions of Cho Won's "false internship confirmation" were raised, Cho Kuk's side stated, "After a long period of deliberation, Cho Won submitted a false internship confirmation when he entered graduate school.
"I have decided to return my controversial master's degree from Yonsei Graduate School due to the documents that were submitted," he said, adding, "I have submitted a certified letter to that effect to Yonsei Graduate School."
Yonsei University has set up a committee to discuss the maintenance of Cho Won's graduate degree from 2022, and has issued an "Internship Confirmation Letter."
It appears that the process of cancelling his admission has been fully underway after former Democratic Party lawmaker Choi Kang-wook, who was tried on charges of false issuance, was found guilty by the Supreme Court.
Cho Won failed to get into the master's and doctoral programs in political science and diplomacy at Yonsei University in the second semester of 2017, but re-applied in the first semester of 2018 and passed, earning his master's degree in 2021.
During the admission process, Cho Won submitted an internship confirmation letter issued by former lawmaker Choi, who is also a lawyer. The court responded, "Representative Choi has not actually worked as an intern.
The court ruled that "the charges of issuing a false internship confirmation letter to Yo Won and interfering with graduate school entrance examination procedures are confirmed," and that former Rep. Choi was sentenced to eight months in prison with two years of probation and lost his position as a member of parliament.
Meanwhile, Cho Won's university entrance exam fraud case is currently under investigation by the prosecution.
