Basic living allowance recipient dies of heatstroke... ”There were no hospitals willing to take him” = South Korea
In South Korea, a basic livelihood support recipient who lost consciousness due to heatstroke was refused admission by 14 hospitals, and later discovered to have died after finally arriving at a hospital.
According to a report by JTBC Newsroom on the 8th, on the 30th of last month, a man was trying to take a drink from the refrigerator at a convenience store in Sangmun-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul.
A person who was in the convenience store's refrigerator suddenly collapsed. The person who collapsed was a person in his 40s who was living alone and was receiving basic living allowance. Security camera footage from the convenience store showed that Mr. A had taken an Eon drink from the refrigerator.
While he was taking it out, he suddenly stumbled and fell to the floor. Mr. A tried to get up, but he seemed to have no strength and remained motionless.
Rescue workers who responded to the call arrived at the convenience store at around 11:03 a.m. and measured Mr. A's body temperature, which was already approaching 40 degrees.
At the time, Mr. A requested, "My house is right in front. Please take me to my house." However, the rescue team could not take Mr. A because there was garbage piled up at the entrance to his house and it was not cool inside.
They decided that Mr. A should not be left alone at home and decided to transport him to a hospital. The rescue team put Mr. A in an ambulance and inquired about transporting him to 14 hospitals, but received repeated replies that they could not accept him.
Mr. A was finally taken to a general hospital in Jung-gu, Seoul at 12:37 p.m., one hour and 34 minutes after he collapsed, but he eventually passed away.
Mr. A was a recipient of basic living benefits and had no time to look after his own health, so he relied on alcohol to get by.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on the 10th,
As of today, a total of 2,077 people have been diagnosed with heatstroke. The death toll is currently at 19.
