South Korea's ”electricity demand” reaches new record high again
In South Korea, Seoul experienced tropical nights for the 23rd consecutive day, and daytime highs across the country rose to around 36 degrees Celsius, while domestic electricity demand again reached a new record high on the 13th.
According to the power exchange, peak demand at 6pm on that day was 94.6GW (gigawatts), the highest ever recorded for both summer and winter.
The previous record was 94.5 GW, recorded on December 23, 2022. Also, looking at summer records alone, this is already the third time this year that maximum electricity demand has been updated.
On this day, the supply capacity was 104.8GW, the supply reserve was 10.1GW, and the supply reserve margin was 10.7%.
This increase in electricity demand is not just for air conditioning, but also for charging electric vehicles, the spread of AI (artificial intelligence), semiconductor manufacturing, and other uses.
It is analyzed that the spread of electrification in daily life and industry is also causing an increase in electricity usage in the country.
