100kg ”iron block” falls in front of bus stop during arrivals to work hours in South Korea
An iron block weighing more than 100 kg fell on the road in front of a new apartment building construction site in Gwangju. The location where it fell was just a meter away from a bus stop.
The accident occurred at around 8:45 a.m. on the 13th on the road in front of a bus stop in Bangnim-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju.
On the morning of the 13th, a hook-shaped 50-centimeter iron block fell from a height of about 50 meters onto the roadway in front of the bus stop. When the iron block fell, a roaring sound was heard along with a "whoosh" sound like a fighter jet flying.
The accident kicked up white dust and left a hole five centimeters deep. Just before the accident, five or six people were waiting for the bus to go to work at the bus stop. A woman in her fifties, Ms. A, was hit by flying debris on her shoulder.
Three other residents were also taken to the hospital after experiencing symptoms of hyperventilation after the sudden accident. All four were deemed to be in good condition.
The driver of a car that was moving slowly on the road witnessed the iron block fall in front of him.
The iron block was found stuck in the middle of the road and unable to move. Minami Ward and fire officials, who investigated the scene, determined that the iron block had fallen from a crane at a nearby construction site.
At the time, workers at the construction site were in the process of dismantling a crane, but it is believed that the lifting gear attached to the crane, which was about 50 meters high, became worn out and fell.
A Minami Ward official said, "The accident appears to have occurred while the crane with the hoisting equipment was being lowered to the ground. We hope that such an accident will not occur again."
We will thoroughly inspect the facility so that it does not become contaminated.
