World leaders send 'Gwangbokjeol' celebration messages to Korean people
As South Korea celebrates the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day (August 15th, the day celebrating South Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule), leaders from around the world sent messages of celebration to the Korean people.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Yoon Seok-yeol met with the United States, China, India, the Vatican, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia on the 14th, the day before Liberation Day.
We received 15 celebration messages from leaders of countries including Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan, Hungary, Bahrain and Belgium.
U.S. President Joe Biden said, "We are sending a celebration to President Yoon and the Korean people on Liberation Day," and added, "The two countries are committed to peace and prosperity."
"I am proud to stand with South Korea for security and freedom," he said. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also said, "On behalf of the US government, I wholeheartedly celebrate South Korea's National Day.
"We will continue to cooperate while upholding our common values of international peace and stability, human rights and individual freedom," he said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said, "The two countries are close and important neighbors and cooperative partners. Together with President Yoon,
"I hope that the relationship between our two countries will continue to develop in a healthy and stable manner," Indian President Draupadi Murmu said. "Korea has achieved remarkable things in all fields, including the economy, technology and culture.
"We appreciate the remarkable developments in our two countries' relations and hope that cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region will lay the foundation for greater benefits for our two peoples," he said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, "South Korea is a key partner in Ukraine's security and humanitarian efforts.
"We are grateful for President Yoon's principled support and his expressed willingness to join in post-war reconstruction," he said, adding, "We hope to continue dialogue with President Yoon."
