Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has donated all of the animal-themed meme coins he has received for a year.
On the 15th (local time), Buterin published receipts related to donations via X (formerly Twitter), revealing all the money he had earned from selling animal-related meme coins over the past year.
According to the receipt, Buterin donated 200,000 yen worth of funds to animal welfare charities on the 14th of last month.
Buterin transferred the ETH to the Effective Altruism Funds animal welfare charity. Meanwhile, Buterin has asked the meme coin community to send him cryptocurrency.
The group called for people to donate the cryptocurrency directly to charities, adding that "after 2024, we need communities to adopt more sophisticated public goods financing practices."
The charitable donation was made through a series of events. Earlier this month, the team behind Shiba Inu-themed meme coin NEIRO used Buterin to draw attention to the coin.
After sending 17.1 billion NEIROs, or 4% of the token supply, to Buterin's wallet address in an attempt to raise funds, Buterin was declared the person with the largest amount of the company's tokens.
Buterin used the fact that he had received the tokens as a PR tool. Less than an hour after receiving the tokens, Buterin sold all of his NEIRO tokens and exchanged them for Ethereum.
The price initially fell by 60%, but then soared by 200%. NEIRO tagged Buterin on X (formerly Twitter) and asked him to donate a portion of the proceeds to charity.
