New Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung proposes summit with President Yoon Seok-yeol (South Korea)

Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, who was successfully re-elected as party leader, said in his acceptance speech on the 18th, "As the new leader, I will propose a top-level meeting with President Yoon Seok-yeol."
Lee said, "The greatest responsibility of politics is to protect the lives of the people and create hope. It is unfortunate that the summit in April did not live up to the people's expectations."
He added, "At our last meeting, we agreed to meet again anytime and communicate and discuss national affairs, so I will wait for the president's response."
He also proposed holding a meeting with People Power leader Han Dong-hoon. "Let's discuss the urgent issues without any barriers."
Lee said, "Above all, there needs to be an open and candid discussion about the Special Prosecutor's Act, which is the biggest issue. Han Dong-hoon is not opposed to finding out the truth."
I think the best option would be for the Democratic Party to propose an independent investigation, but Chairman Han Dong-hoon has also proposed recommending a third-party independent investigation, so I wonder if there is a better plan to investigate the facts, assuming an independent investigation is brought in.
"We need to have an open discussion," he said. "I hope that we can discuss ways to overcome the severe issues affecting people's livelihoods, particularly the prolonged slump in domestic demand.
"The main party believes that the most effective measure is to provide immediate and comprehensive support for the recovery of people's livelihoods," he added.
"If there are any plans to support the working people's economy and help economic recovery, I would like to say that we are open to discussions and acceptance," he said.
He also said, "Let's put an end to the politics of extreme confrontation and discuss ways to develop democratic politics that will ease regionalism that is destroying our nations.
"Even if we put off the big issues, I hope that Chairman Han Dong-hoon will make a personal promise and that we will start by discussing the issue of reviving local parties, on which the ruling and opposition parties are in agreement," he said.
