Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung reappointed... Candidate Jeong Bong-ju drops out of Supreme Committee elections (South Korea)
Lee Jae-myung, the new leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was re-elected as the party's leader with 85.40% of the votes, the highest percentage in the party's history. The party's re-election was made by former President Kim Dae-jung.
In addition, candidate Jeong Bong-ju, who had made derogatory remarks about the party's candidate for the helm of the party, was defeated in the election as a member of the Supreme Committee.
Lee was at the KSPO Dome in Olympic Park, Songpa-gu, Seoul that afternoon.
At the first regular national party meeting of the Democratic Party of Korea, Lee won 85.40% of the votes and was elected as the new party leader.
This marks the highest vote share in the history of the Democratic Party's leadership elections, exceeding 77.7%. With this, Chairman Lee will once again lead the Democratic Party for the first time in about two months since he resigned as party leader on June 24 to be re-elected.
Candidate Kim Du-kwan, who competed against candidate Lee, received 12.12% of the votes, while candidate Kim Ji-soo received 2.48%.
The last time a leader of a Democratic Party-affiliated party was reappointed was as president of the National Congress for New Politics from 1995 to 2000.
During the party convention, Chairman Lee emphasized the people's livelihood and practicality under the banner of "Moksaniism (maintaining livelihood)."
The government has indicated its stance on relaxing the previously taboo comprehensive real estate tax and on deferring and supplementing financial investment income tax.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Council members who joined the new leadership alongside Lee are also pro-
Candidates Kim Min-Seok, Jung Hyun-Hee, Han Jun-Ho, Kim Byung-Ju, and Lee Eon-Ju, who are all members of the Lee Jae-Myung faction, are also candidates.
The percentage of votes received by each candidate was as follows: Kim Min-seok 18.23%, Jeon Hyun-hee 15.88%, Han Jun-ho 14.14%, Kim Byung-ju 13.08%, and Lee Eon-ju 12.30%.
The position of Chief Supreme Committee Member was assumed by candidate Kim Min-seok, who received the highest percentage of votes. Candidate Chung Bong-ju was leading in the early stages of the election, but after making derogatory remarks about party representative candidate Lee Jae-myung, he was forced to resign.
During the party conference, when candidate Chung Bong-ju made his speech, shouts of "Apologize," "Resign," and "Get out" were heard from the audience, where party members were seated.
Criticisms were leveled one after another, and party members holding pickets urging Chung Bong-ju to withdraw were heard booing throughout the venue.
