People's Power Chairman Han Dong-hoon and Democratic Party Chairman Lee Jae-myung meet on 25th to discuss civilian issues (South Korea)
Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling People's Power Party, and Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, will hold their first meeting of the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 25th.
On the afternoon of the 19th, the People's Power Party announced through a notice in the Public Information Office that the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties will hold a "meeting for the people's livelihood" at the National Assembly at 3 p.m. on the 25th.
The Democratic Party's Chief of Staff (Lee Hae-sik) also told reporters at the National Assembly that afternoon, "I wonder if Chairman Han Dong-hoon is leading a relatively independent and horizontal party-government relationship with the Presidential Office of the President Yongsan."
"There are serious doubts about this, but we made the decision nevertheless in order to alleviate the suffering of the people and to break the deadlock in the political situation," he said, explaining the background to the success.
This is the first meeting between Han and Lee since Han was elected at the July 23 Plenary Party Congress. The two met on December 29 last year, when Han was serving as chairman of the emergency response committee.
He paid a courtesy visit to the head of the Democratic Party of Korea in Myeong-do and sat across from him. The first negotiations on specific policy issues between the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties were held in July 2021 under Song Young-gil of the Democratic Party of Korea, which was the ruling party at the time.
The ruling and opposition parties plan to further hold talks between working-level officials to decide on the specific agenda and attendees for the meeting.
In addition to the financial investment income tax (Kinpo Tax) and the establishment of the National Assembly Special Committee on Pensions, various civil affairs bills, the 'third-party recommended' special investigation bill for Corporal Choi, and civil affairs recovery support funds (250,000 won (approximately 27,313 yen) for all citizens) were also proposed.
The third-party recommendation special prosecutor bill was one of Han's campaign pledges at the party convention, and recently the Democratic Party of Korea indicated it might accept it, so it has suddenly come up as a bill. Han has
He also previously suggested the possibility of selectively providing subsidies for civil recovery, something the government and ruling party had been negative about.
