”Couple dies just before daughter's wedding”...Brake failure not the cause = Korea

On the Buddha's Birthday, a celebration in South Korea to mark the birth of Buddha three months ago, three people from two couples who had visited a temple were killed when they were hit by an SUV driven by a woman in her 60s.
At the time, the driver claimed that "the brakes didn't work," but the National Forensic Service concluded that "the engine hadn't started in the first place."
At around 4:15 p.m. on May 15, a car driven by a 64-year-old man collided with four pedestrians on a downhill road in front of Munjusri Temple in Shingok-ri, Dogae-myeon, Gumi City, North Gyeongsang Province.
The incident killed two men in their 60s and one woman in her 50s, and left another woman in her 50s seriously injured. It was discovered that the couple had been visiting the temple when the attack occurred.

It was presumed that the brakes had broken on a 35-degree slope, causing the car to crash into the road. Mr. A also told the police, "I started the engine and stepped on the brakes, but they didn't work."
However, the National Forensic Service concluded that the car was likely driven downhill with the engine turned off.
According to SBS on the 20th, Mr. A's car, which was parked on a slope before the accident, started moving to the left, suddenly went back and forth, and crashed into four pedestrians.
The vehicle crashed into a stream on the side of the road and then came to a stop. The EDR and security cameras on the vehicle did not detect the engine running, and the brake lights were not on, which was a warning to nearby vehicles.
The incident was caught on security camera footage. Police determined that when Mr. A turned the key halfway to turn the car on, he mistakenly thought the engine was running and shifted the gears into drive, causing the car to move.
The prosecution also determined that Mr. A was negligent and issued an indictment without detention.
